On Wednesday, Chimp Haven welcomed the last of 16 chimpanzees who have arrived at the facility since October—six males and 10 females, ranging in age from 15 to 47. All are doing well as they adjust to their new home.
Upon their arrival, the chimpanzees were given a physical exam by Chimp Haven veterinarian, Dr. Raven Jackson. Then, they were taken to their new bedrooms in a quarantine area to rest.
Once the chimpanzees are deemed free of communicable diseases, they will leave the quarantine area and start the process of becoming integrated into chimpanzee social groups. This can be a delicate process that can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending upon the personalities of the chimpanzees. Some chimpanzees fit right in; others have to work through conflicts with their new groups members. At times, those conflicts become boisterous.
After introductions are complete and we can take photographs, we will introduce you to our new residents so that you can put a face with a name.
